Employment for life is over, has been for a while and for me, it’s a really positive thing. For millennials and the future generations, a lot of it comes down to choice. We now have more options for the type of career(s) we want to have. And jobs that didn’t exist 5 years ago are now major career options for younger people.
Apart from choice, the 4th industrial revolution is changing the employment market, we are all being forced to become hybrids, to be agile with our skills sets. The number one skill of future generations will be adaptability.
To remain competitive, and to give low and high-skilled workers alike the best chance of success, economies need to offer training and career-focused education throughout people’s working lives - The Economist.
This has changed the game for education and for the way we think about learning.
The old world of educate > work > retire has gone. We all now need to be lifelong learners.
The future is a demanding place!
Why is this important? Because the future is a demanding place. The 4th industrial revolution is going to be amazing, but potemtially damaging, especially for humans, careers and employment options. We can already see unskilled roles being filled by machines, robots and software.
But it isn’t just the unskilled, even the more regarded and highly educated careers are being disrupted; doctors being replaced by tech and AI, lawyers being replaced by smart contracts and machine learning and marketers being replaced by data, machines and technology.
The two year cycle
This means we can now expect to have 4-7 careers in our lifetime, which is pretty exciting if you think about it, 4 opportunities to reinvent ourselves, to unlearn and relearn.
People are working for 2 years and jobs are being invented every 2 years. It’s a marketplace. This means we have an opportunity to become cyclical learners. Moving towards learning new skills on a continuous basis.
Luckily this tech explosion has given us a range of businesses and opportunities at very low cost and in our own time to learn and increase our knowledge. Even if that is beyond you, reading is still the ultimate key to knowledge.

My 5 tips to get started
Read everyday. Reading can be tough, tough to find the time, but the modern world gives us the tools to fit it in. Try podcasts at 1.5x speed, get flipbook and medium to get short form content for your downtime. Get on Audible and listen to books at 1.5x while you work or excercise. It will change your life.
Take a course online or after work. There are so many ways of taking a course online or in your own time. Try General Assembly as a great place to start, lots of distance, evening and impactful courses from free to paid. Coursera is also a great resource for any course on any subject from anywhere in the world.
Become part of the community. Meetups are a great way to expand your friend group. Surrounding yourself with smart and passionate people is a great way of levelling up. Check out meetup.com to find something in your area and your interest.
Teach others. If you are passionate about something, share it with others. This could be helping out at a local course, school or university. It could be getting up and talking about your subject at events. Sharing and talking are two ways to keep your mind active, to make you think and keep you craving knowledge.
